From the end of the Middle Ages to the 18th century, the Netherlands was an important center for artistic innovation and production. One of the most well-known artists of the Dutch Golden Age (roughly 1625–75) was Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–69), a prolific painter, draftsman, and etcher who worked first in Leiden before settling in Amsterdam.
