The MFA’s collection of Japanese art was established in the late 19th century to provide a historical narrative for the Western world. Now encompassing around 100,000 works in all media dating from Neolithic times to the present day, the collection continues to evolve, responding to new narrative visions of Japan’s art and visual culture.
