Description
This impression appears to be of Callot's original plate. It contains the publication line of Vincent, which is not remarked on by Lieure, making it a state after Lieure's iv/iv. However, Lieure notes that the plates for this series are conserved in the museum in Nancy. Therefore, either (1) this is an amazingly deceptive copy, (2) Lieure overlooked the Vincent publication line on the plate, and never saw an impression with the publication line, or (3) the Vincent publication line was removed from the plate at some point.
InscriptionsEngraved in the plate, bottom right-center, "Chez Md. Vincent proche St. Benoit. ruë St. Jacques à Paris."
ProvenanceHenry F. Sewall, New York (1816-1896)(Lugt 1309); purchased by MFA November 1897
