Fragment of a wall hanging with a servant opening a curtain
400-550
Medium/TechniqueTapestry weave in dyed wool and undyed linen
Technique: Technique: ground of very fine linen in plain weave; design components (arcade, figure, curtain) in tapestry weave (linen warp and very fine dyed wool and undyed linen weft). Woven with warps perpendicular to the design.
Technical details:
??? Warps and wefts yarn composition, spinning direction
Current condition: The figure with the curtain and the arcade have been separated from the ground and re-mounted on a new backing (? 2026-17).
Prior condition (? 1957-2016 ?): ? Acquisition record and other conservation information if available. The condition can be also somewhat assessed from an old MFA postcard. The wall hanging shows the arcade and the figure preserved with a substantial area of the ground, especially within the arcade. As to be expected, the ground is stained and appears very fragile. It is possible that some areas of the ground are re-used fillers, a common practice in textile presentation for display.
