The Microcosm provided its readers views of famous public places, like churches and theaters, but it also illustrated famous places that few had seen. The Board of Trade, which set the rules that governed Britain’s overseas commerce, was an immensely important but largely invisible body. This view of the Board’s handsomely appointed meeting room, complete with busy office workers, probably gave many readers their first view of the bureaucracy in action.
