Description

The Custom House was the nerve center of the port of London, which was, in turn, the city’s window to the world and the source of much of the nation’s commerce and wealth. The Custom House was where merchants paid taxes, officials issued permits, and people and goods from across the world came into the city. Look for the merchants dressed in clothes from the Islamic world at lower right.
