Description
The title "St. Elias" is Bartsch's; Passavant is the source for the title "The Anchorites SS Anthony and Paul in the Desert." This impression, of an outline block only, is identical to that illustrated in The Illustrated Bartsch, vol. 48, p. 120, and described there (and in the original Bartsch) as the first state. The impression illustrated on p. 121, and called a second state, is printed from a line block and a tone block, but the line block is different from that from which this impression is taken, and that is illustrated on p. 120. Bartsch says the line block was altered for the second state, but the two prints illustrated in TIB appear to be from different blocks.
