Narihira Passing Mount Fuji on His Journey to the East (concert program)

Tales of Ise, attributed to the 10^th-century aristocrat Ariwara no Narihira, is a collection of poems with accompanying stories. This particular episode recounts Narihira’s journey from Kyoto to the eastern provinces. The upside-down text below announces a performance of jōrūri chanting. It was originally folded in half horizontally, with the image on one side and the text on the other, and then folded into three sections to make a convenient small program. Complete examples of this type of print are rare, as many collectors removed and discarded the text portion.
