Inscriptions那古海蜃楼  此浦より春夏の間蜃楼海上にたつ 諺にいはく 伊勢太神宮尾張の熱田宮へ神幸ありといふ 行幸旌蓋前後にあり また諸侯行列の躰または楼台宮殿のかたち鮮にて時に漁人見ることあり たちまち須臾(しばらく)のあひだに消々となる 按るに潮水の気陽精に乗じてたち昇るなり 陽炎の類ひにやあらんとなり

[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
