Description
Guardi displays a charming ambition in the carving of this small marble relief, as he stresses the layering of the three-dimensional forms of the figures. Notice how the baby tucks his hand behind the left arm of his mother, who brings her hands together in prayer but holds them behind her own face as she looks down at her son.
ProvenanceQuincy Adams Shaw (b. 1825 - d. 1908), Boston; 1917, gift of Quincy Adams Shaw, through Quincy Adams Shaw, Jr., and Mrs. Marian Shaw Haughton, to the MFA. (Accession Date: March 29, 1917)
