Description
We don’t know who designed this advertisement for one of upstate New York’s leading manufacturers of steam engines, but engines were big business by the 1880s, and needed sophisticated and eye-catching advertising. Cosack and Co. was one of the leading printing firms of the day, famous for vivid colors and labor-intensive printing; this sheet required more than a dozen passes through the press to create the full range of colors.
