ProvenanceOriginally part of a sculpture at Candi Sewu, Java, Indonesia [see note]. 1931, acquired in Java by George Holden Tinkham (b. 1870 - d. 1956), Boston; 1943, gift of George Holden Tinkham to the MFA. (Accession date: January 14, 1943)

NOTE: At the time he acquired this head, Tinkham had a sworn statement of authenticity signed by Pieter Vincent van Stein Callenfels, Acting Head of the Archaeological Service of the Dutch East Indies, stating that it was from Candi Sewu. The statement was, in addition, signed and stamped on October 1931 by K.S. Patton, Consul General of the United States of America at Batavia, Java.
