Description
The Minots were married in Boston in 1805 and then set off on a business trip to Calcutta, India. They returned to the United States the following year, when these likenesses were painted, in New York. According to Trumbull's account book, he was paid $200 for the two portraits (about $2600 today). The original, leaf-patterned frames are American interpretations of contemporary, high style French frames. The daughter of the sitters gave the paintings to the Museum.
ProvenanceThe artist; to Stephen Minot, the sitter's husband; to Miss Susan I. Minot, their daughter; to MFA, 1879, gift of Miss Susan I. Minot.
