ProvenanceOctober 17, 1854, said to have been sold from the collection of "Auguste de la Charlière", probably Auguste Charlier, Belgium [see note 1]. 1866, possibly Henry Sayles (b. 1834 - d. 1918), Boston [see note 2]. Thomas Gold Appleton (b. 1812 - d. 1884), Boston; 1884, bequest of Thomas Gold Appleton to the MFA. (Accession Date: June 2, 1884)

NOTES:
[1] Written on the back of the painting is "Provenante de la vente Auguste de la Charlière. 18[5]4. Oct. 17." This provenance--which may refer to Auguste Charlier of Belgium--has not been verified. Notes in the MFA curatorial file suggest that the sale is to be identified with the auction of an anonymous Belgian collector held in October, 1854. [2] Possibly the Troyon painting "Landscape with Sheep" lent by Sayles to the Allston Club, Boston, 1866, cat. no. 93.
