[3] In a letter of January 31, 1924 in the MFA curatorial files, Pierre de Chaignon la Rose wrote that the painting "belonged for at least three quarters of the 19th century to the Biencourt family and was part of the collection of the late Marquis de Biencourt at Azay le Rideau. At the death of a M. du Biencourt ... the collection was dispersed and the portrait was bought, through a dealer, by a cousin of mine in Paris and later, came into my own possession."
