Description
Michael Spano's views of contemporary New York City are created in the camera, rather than found on the street. Spano produces diptychs like this one by combining two separate exposures, taken at different times and from varying perspectives, on a single sheet of film. For this example, he juxtaposed an image of a blonde model smiling down from a billboard with another shot of a young female pedestrian squinting into the sun. Spano's technique leads the viewer to visually combine the two halves of the picture, in the process suggesting the dynamic and fragmentary encounters typical of a busy New York intersection
