Troyon was one of the 19th-century’s great animaliers—artists specialized in animal subjects. In this “portrait” of a hunting dog from the kennels of his friend and fellow painter Léon Félix Loysel, Troyon drew on a tradition of sporting art that reached back to 17th-century Holland, incorporating a flat landscape and glowering sky to heighten the drama of the chase.
