Description
Based on their style, Stuart probably painted portraits of John (37.40) and Catherine Amory  soon after he arrived in Boston. Amory already had retired from a successful career in a mercantile business. The Amorys were great-grandparents of Martha Codman Karolik; she and her husband Maxim Karolik were among the Museum's foremost donors. Several pieces of furniture by John and Thomas Seymour in this gallery descended from John Amory.
ProvenanceThe artist; to Catherine Amory Codman, the sitter's daughter, Boston; to Misses Catherine E. and Maria P. Codman, her daughters, Bristol, R.I.; to Martha Codman Karolik, their niece, Newport, R.I., about 1902; to MFA, 1937, gift of Maxim and Martha C. Karolik.
