ProvenanceThe artist; possibly American Art Union, New York, distributed by lot to George Thompson, White Plains, New York, 1847 (no. 42, The Palisade Rocks, Hudson River); Codman family, nineteenth century; descended to Martha C. (Mrs. Maxim) Karolik, Newport, R.I.; to MFA, 1947, gift of Maxim Karolik.

Also possible that this painting was shown by the Apollo Association, the predecessor of the American Art-Union, as a painting under the same title was shown in 1838's October Exhibition, no. 65. (per Cowdrey, American Academy and American Art-Union Exhibition Record, 1953.)
