[1] Dr. Stillman wrote in a letter dated May 1, 1974 in the Art of the Americas curatorial files: "Some months after Miss Norton had died, her niece wrote me a very nice letter in which she said that she thought it appropriate that the painting by Mr. William Stillman should belong to a member of his clan."
