ProvenanceCharles Mixter (b. 1811 - d. 1874), Boston [see note]; by descent through his daughter, Helen Kortright Mixter Appleton (b. 1864 - d. 1939), Boston, to her daughter, Julia Appleton (Mrs. Charles Sumner) Bird (b. 1894 - d. 1983), East Walpole, MA; 1981, year-end gift of Julia Appleton Bird to the MFA. (Accession Date: January 13, 1982)

NOTE: At the time of the gift, Mrs. Bird wrote to the MFA that the painting "belonged to my grandfather, who died about 1872" [sic]. This must refer to her maternal grandfather, who died in 1874; Mrs. Bird inherited other works of art from her mother's side of the family.
