NOTES: [1] Lent to the MFA by estate executor Richard Hale on June 28, 1929. The painting was returned on May 20, 1932 to the artist William James, Jr. [2] David McKibbin was the art librarian at the Boston Athenaeum beginning in 1934, and Donald Kelley was gallery director there beginning in 1967.
