Richard Artschwager acknowledges the Pop, Minimal and Conceptual movements of the 1960s and 1970s with humor in his work. Artschwager ran his own furniture factory in the early 1960s, an experience that remains central to his art making. His preference for everyday objects and industrial materials, such as formica, is a direct response to Pop art. Examples of his furniture are finely crafted sculptures, simultaneously mimicking real objects and betraying their identity as artistic creations. The folding chair is also a provocative arrangement of natural materials in a seductive configuration.
