One-Two-One with Two Half-Off

A pioneer of Minimal and Conceptual art, Sol LeWitt's considers the idea behind the work of art to be paramount to the finished product. His role as artist is therefore more akin to that of an architect or designer, conceiving the work of art himself and having others fabricate it to his exact specifications. Throughout his career, LeWitt has continually returned to the grid and the cube, revealing a fascination with the infinite possibilities of these simple forms. In One-Two-One with Two half-Off, LeWitt stacks cubes in the manner described in his title, using the simple modular forms to create a complex structure. The artist selected the white enamel over aluminum for its formal clarity and lack of specific associations.
