Description
McCollum's work challenges the status of the unique work of art and he has created multiples of ordinary and extraordinary objects to make his point. Here, he has replicated a cast displayed at the Vesuvius Museum in Pompeii of an ancient canine immobilized and suffocated by volcanic lava. The hollow mold was one of many filled in the 19th century to make replicas of lost objects.  The artist has requested that a minimum of two multiples from this open-ended edition be exhibited together in order to undermine the concept of originality in art.
