Description
This portrait, the first American sculpture to enter the Museum's collection, conveys the resolve and uncompromising idealism of celebrated Massachusetts senator Charles Sumner. Sumner met Crawford while traveling in Europe in 1839 and found support and patronage for the sculptor.
