ProvenanceMade for Mary Willoughby Barton (b. 1676 - d. 1758), Salem, MA [see note 1]; to her daughter, Mary Willoughby Barton Toppan (b. 1715 - d. 1776), Salem; to her daughter, Mary Barton Toppan Pickman (b. 1744 - d. 1817); to her son, Thomas Pickman (b. 1775 - d. 1817); to his daughter, Mary Toppan Pickman Loring (b. 1816 - d. 1878); to her daughter, Sally Pickman Loring Dwight (b. 1859 - d. 1913) [see note 2]; May 17, 1918, transferred to the estate of her son, Lawrence Dwight (b. 1896 - d. 1918); by inheritance to his distant cousin, Dudley Leavitt Pickman (b. 1850 - d. 1938) and his wife, Ellen Rodman Motley Pickman (b. 1854 - d. 1939) [see note 4]; 1931, gift of Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Leavitt Pickman to the MFA. [1] The granddaughter of Francis Willoughby, deputy governor of Massachusetts from 1665 to 1671), she married Thomas Barton; he bequeathed "unto my dearly beloved wife.. All her Maiden Plate as a Tanckard Spoons ect and as moch more as she may want to be useful for her." [2] Lent by the estate of Sally Pickman Dwight to the MFA on May 5, 1916. [3] Transferred to the estate of Lawrence Dwight on May 17, 1918. The loan was returned by the MFA to estate of Lawrence Dwight, June 28, 1918. [4] Sally Pickman Leavitt Dwight was the third cousin of Dudley Leavitt Pickmann.
