Description
This topsail sloop was among the first armed vessels of the colonial navy and the first war vessel commanded by John Paul Jones. During his command, Jones seized sixteen vessels; under later commands, "Providence" remained a threat to the British. In 1779, in order to escape British capture, the crew of "Providence" ran the vessel ashore and destroyed her.
