ProvenanceThe chair descended from the Rev. James Keith (1643-1719) of Bridgewater, Mass., who emigrated from Scotland to Boston in 1662 and became the first ordained minister of Brdgewater in 1664. Family history stated that "it was brought from Scotland." It descended through his great-granddaughter, Susannah Keith (Mrs. Solomon) Ames, to Simon Ames, Jotham Ames, Washington L. Ames, and finally to Myles Standish Ames, from whom it was purchased by Mr. Tyler. When the chair was bought, it lacked one spindle and was fitted with rockers, as shown in an early newspaper article which gave its family history. Lent by Charles H. Tyler, October 3, 1928; included in his 1932 bequest to the museum (Accession Date September 1, 1932)
