Sailors on warships used pikes to board enemy vessels or to prevent enemy sailors from boarding theirs. The pike end was painted red, a traditional practice for concealing blood. This boarding pike reportedly is one of a hundred from "Constitution," which were sold in 1890, when they had little military value. When "Constitution" was restored, in 1932, most of the pikes were returned.
