InscriptionsPencil inscription on inside of front rail of slip seat reads: "1/2 lb Old Hair."
ProvenanceTraditionally the chair was used by Miss Norton's father, Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), and others of his family as children at "Shady Hill," Cambridge. Andrews Norton (1786-1853) married Catharine Eliot in 1821; their son Charles Eliot Norton married Susan Sedgwick (d. 1872) in1862; by descent to their daughter Elizabeth Gaskell Norton, who gave the chair to the MFA in1957 (Accession Date November 14, 1957); October 25, 2012, deaccessioned by the MFA for sale through Northeast Auctions, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
