Description
The rooms in seventeenth-century houses were few and small, and multi-purpose furniture was essential. Chests provided a place for sleeping and sitting, storage space for textiles, and often a lidded compartment (or till) for small articles. This chest, inscribed with the initials AC for the original owner, also has two drawers below the chest section, providing additional room for smaller items.
InscriptionsThe initials "AC" are carved on panels of top rail above cental lozenge. Also a pencil inscription on back.
ProvenanceProbably made for an original owner with the initials "AC"; 1928, lent by Hollis French, May 31; 1940, gift of Hollis French (Accession Date October 10, 1940)
