Description
This chest originally was brightly painted with a variety of floral motifs and other decoration on its front, sides, and lid. The initials ES and the date 1704, which appear on the central panel, are presumably the initials of the original owner and the date of its commissioning or construction. The chest may have been made for a special occasion, perhaps a marriage.
ProvenanceEarly history unknown, although probably made for an original owner with the initials "E.S." Lent by Philip Leffingwell Spalding, October 29, 1928. Transferred to Mrs. Philip L. Spalding, October 10, 1940; given in 1940 by members of the Spalding family.
