ProvenanceProbably first belonged to a member of the Metcalfe family of Dedham, Massachusetts, perhaps to Thomas Metcalfe (1629-1702); descended through a marriage of one of Thomas's great-granddaughters to an ancestor of a private collector in the twentieth century; purchased by the Museum in 1984.
