InscriptionsThere are two chalk inscriptions, one on the back of the front of the third drawer and the other on the front of the back of the second drawer. The first reads: "Sam . . . Barnes (or Banes)" and the second "Samuel . . ." The drawers are numbered on the back of the front from the bottom up in Roman numerals: I, II, III, IIII. In pencil on back of top drawer: "No. 1" In pencil on back of second and third drawers: "3" In pencil on back of fourth drawer: "5" There are inscriptions in ink on paper glued to the back of the case and to the inside of the top drawer that read: "Loaned by / C. Jay French / Boston / Mass. / October 1917." In ink on bottom of top drawer: "C. Jay French"ProvenanceProbably owned originally by Samuel Barnes of Portsmouth, New Hampshire; bought in New Hampshire; 1917, lent by C. Jay French, Boston, Massachusetts, October 18, 1917; 1922, made a gift by C. Jay French (Accession Date July 20, 1922)
