Duke Carl I founded the Fürstenberg factory in 1747, making it the second royal German porcelain manufactory after Meissen. He married Philippine Charlotte, a daughter of King Frederick Wilhelm I of Prussia; her porcelain bust with ermine cloak and white frilled cap is nearby.
ProvenanceAbout 1760, probably Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (b. 1735 - d. 1806) (probably original commission) [see note 1]. By 1993, Edward M. Pflueger (b. 1905 - d. 1997) and Kiyi Powers Pflueger (b. 1915 - d. 2008), New York; 2006, bequest of Edward M. Pflueger and gift of Kiyi Powers Pflueger to the MFA. (Accession Date: April 26, 2006)
