At this point in the development of the plate, Wilson introduced aquatint, a process that allows for areas of continuous tone. When printed, these areas appear like gray wash (clearly visible in the torso and the wing-like shadow at upper right). The initial application of aquatint shrouded King’s head in deep shadow.
