Description
This shield, from the Dayak peoples, was used in warfare and was particularly common in central Borneo. It is made of light brown wood and is reinforced horizontally with four rows of rattan lashes in a slightly concave rectangular form.
Provenance1960 or 1977, sold by Galerie Argiles, Paris, to Geneviève McMillan (b. 1922 - d. 2008), Cambridge, MA; 2008, to the Geneviève McMillan and Reba Stewart Foundation, Cambridge; 2009, gift of the Geneviève McMillan and Reba Stewart Foundation to the MFA. (Accession Date: June 17, 2009)
