The Pottery exemplified the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement which promoted handcraftsmanship, the integration of art into everyday life, and healthy working conditions for artisans. Decorated with playful designs of barnyard animals, native flowers, and rural landscapes, the ceramics were made, decorated, and signed by members of the Saturday Evening Girls club, which was established in 1899 to provide cultural activities for immigrant girls of Italian and Jewish heritage living in the tenements of Boston's North End.
