Christian Burchard’s early focus was on furniture and interiors, but it gradually shifted to a practice that synthesizes traditions of turning vessel forms and the experimentation of contemporary sculpture. With a deep understanding of his material and process, the artist allows the wood’s unique qualities to reveal themselves, rather than imposing excessive interventions: “I am curious what is inside, how it works. I am always looking for the gifts it has to offer. At times I am awed by its beauty.”
