Inscriptions「旧ハ猟師弥次兵衛の娘なれども紅陽法師の怨霊皮肉に分いりて黒田の家を絶さんと右衛門の佐を色に＃らし毛谷主水とひそかに通じ種々悪計を回す内同じ愛妾於梅の方と於英が同月孕身となりしを嫉くおもひお梅の方を祷り殺さんと福岡城外昼だに凄き丹後沢木立明神へ夜参り為を石堂帯刀に怪しまれ既に捕へられんとせし袖を振切り百間樋を渡りて逃しも紅陽法師のあく霊お英を守る故にとそ　東竜斎貞玉誌」

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
