Provenance1112, probably commissioned as a gift for the retired Emperor Shirakawa (b. 1053 - d. 1129); remained within the Imperial Household; 1549, presented as a gift by Emperor Gonara (b. 1495 - d. 1557) to the monk Shonyo (b. 1516 – d. 1554) of Hongan-ji Temple, Ishiyama; 1580, temple at Ishiyama destroyed and its volumes transferred, at an unknown date, to Nishi Hongan-ji temple, Kyoto; 1896, rediscovered in the storehouse of Nishi Hongan-ji, Kyoto; 1929, sold by the temple. October 27, 2004, sold by Shouun Oriental Art, Tokyo, to Sylvan Barnet and William Burto, Cambridge, MA; 2014, gift of Sylvan Barnet and the estate of William Burto to the MFA.
