The New York-born, Paris-based photographer William Klein introduced a sense of self-reflective irony to fashion photography. Working for Conde Nast in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he enjoyed making fun in his images of the artificiality and snobbishness of the fashion world. In making this, one of his best-known images, the photographer instructed the models to walk back and forth on the crosswalk, the further one turning back to take note of their similarity of dress. Klein also made sure to include down-to-earth elements of everyday life such as pedestrians and a motorcyclist.
