NOTES:
[1] According to Gerard Hoet, Catalogus of Naamlyst van schilderyen, vol. 1 (The Hague, 1752), p. 177, lots 4 and 5 in the Quirijn van Strijen sale were described as “Farmer Household” by Adriaen van Ostade. Buyer information given by Richard Green, The Cabinet Picture: Dutch and Flemish Masters of the Seventeenth Century (London, 1999).

[2] The French edition of the catalogue names the seller as Jean Henri, Comte et Seigneur Banneret de Wassenaar. Unico Willem’s estate may have sold it as Johann Hendrik’s collection or there may have been a misidentification of which Graaf van Wassenaer estate was being sold.

[3] This is probably the dealer Desmarest (also Desmarets, Demarais). This painting was not included in the March 17, 1797 sale of the stock of dealer Desmarest, after he went out of business.

[4] According to John Smith, Catalogue Raisonné of the Most Eminent Dutch, Flemish, and French Painters, vol. 1 (London, 1829), no. 104. Jeremiah Harman also lent "An Interior" by Adriaen Ostade to the British Institution in 1815, but it is not certain that this is the same painting.
