Description"Reisemalheurs (Travel Woes)" is a word created by Sigmund Freud to describe the unsettling experience of being far from home. Dislocation and its impact on individuals, cultures, and the artist herself is a key theme of Koorland's recent work. The artist, who was born in South Africa to a Holocaust survivor, now lives in New York. In her practice, Koorland is less focused on her own history, however, than on the broader phenomenon of migration, chosen or forced, and its residual effects.
