ProvenanceAbout 1780, acquired by Sir John Caldwell (b. 1756 - d. 1830), 5th Bt., Castle Caldwell, County Fermanagh, Ireland [see note 1]; until the 1960s, probably by descent within the family and sold to Arthur Speyer (b. 1894 - d. 1958), Hamburg, Germany. By 1982, Herb Wellington, Long Island, NY. May 10, 2008, sale (auction 2408), Skinner, Boston, lot 326, to Timothy Phillips, Cambridge, MA; 2008, gift of Timothy Phillips to the MFA. (Accession Date: December 17, 2008)

NOTES:
[1] According to the 2008 Skinner catalogue. During the Revolutionary War (1776-1780), he was stationed at Forts Oswegatchie, Niagara, Detroit, and Michilimackinac as an officer in the 8th (King's) Regiment of Foot. In the 1960s, Arthur Speyer purchased a number of objects collected by John Caldwell from his descendants.
