Inspired by Maori and Fijian wood-carving and mark-making traditions, Madsen crafts traditionally Western furniture forms with intricately carved, geometric-patterned surfaces. After studying the accomplished free workmanship of master carvers in both Tasmania and Fiji, Madsen adapted their techniques to create works like this mirror, whose juxtaposed light and dark materials further activate a surface composed of tight and loose curved lines.
