Description

The sinuous lines and elaborate carved dcoration of this chair make it an unusually rich example of English seating furniture of the early eighteenth century. The richness is accentualted by the use of gilding to hightlight the areas of detailed carving. Note that the design of the back splat, stiles (uprights), and top rail is found with minor variations on a pair of slightly later mahogany chairs exhibited nearby.

ProvenancePart of a suite of chairs from Worsborough Hall, Yorkshire. By 1983, Mr. and Mrs. I.W. Colburn, Marblehead, MA; 1991, gift of Mr. and Mrs. Colburn to the MFA. (Accession Date: September 25, 1991)
