Description
This terracotta was probably made as a work of art in its own right, not as a model for something else, but the composition does appear in another format and material. Brustolon, who was known for his virtuosity as a wood-carver, also used this allegorical figure of the Christian virtue of Faith to decorate an elaborate wood frame.
ProvenanceBy 1735, Paolo Brustolone (b. 1664- d. 1735) [see note 1]. 1944, Ephron Gallery, New York; 1944, sold by the Ephron Gallery to the MFA for $175. (Accession Date: June 8, 1944)

Notes:
[1] Paolo Brustolone was the artist's brother, heir and collaborator. His ownership is suggested by an inscription dated August 20, 1735 on the back of the piece.
