ProvenanceSaid to have descended in the family of Mary Chapin (b. 1763) of Enfield, Connecticut, first cousin of Eliphalet Chapin; by descent to the Childs family, Woodstock, Connecticut; by 1964, sold by the family to Eden Galleries, Longmeadow, Massachusetts [see note 1]; by 1966, Florene Maine, Ridgefield, Connecticut [see note 2]; August 1977, consigned by Maine at Robert Skinner auction, Ridgefield, Connecticut [see note 2] to Robert and Mary Lou Sutter, Mamaroneck, New York; 2017, bequest of the Sutters to the MFA.
